1-19-25 2nd OT C - Fr. Leo Schneider

2nd Sunday of OT—Fr. Leo Schneider

The liturgical year moves quickly.  Last week Jesus was baptized in the Jordan and today he manifests his divinity by changing water into wine. He didn’t do it to draw attention to himself, but to act out of his sensitivity to his mother’s concern and the people’s need.  The wedding planners were in trouble and a huge downer for all was avoided.

I like that Jesus manifest his divinity in the midst of a gathering of family and friends.  It’s all about relationships.  Husband and wife, relatives, and friends. We are reminded that God is present most importantly in people around us.

A reflection from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians fits this moment well. There Paul speaks of the one Spirit that manifest itself in us in many different ways.  So, as we see Jesus respond to the needs of the people around him, we are wise to ask ourselves, how do we respond to those around us?  What gifts might we have? Could I be, or am I a healer, a prophet, a discerner, a person of wisdom, of knowledge, a speaker or interpreter of tongues?

We may marvel at what Jesus did at the wedding feast, but we might marvel in new ways if we understand that what Jesus did, we are to do in our own way with the gifts we have been given. The Lord has called each one of us to be this active love in this world.

So let us pray this week to discern what our gifts are.  How has the Spirit been active in us?  Then in faith let us invite the Holy Spirit to help us manifest our share in God’s divinity.

Come, Holy Spirit, enkindle in us the fire of your love!
