29th Sunday  - Fr. Leo

“For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mk)

It is infinitely inspiring to reflect on Jesus, the Son of God, being the servant of all.  It touches the heart to think that the creator of all comes to us in Christ in the sharing of the Holy Spirit to love us and share his divinity with us.

What is harder for us to embrace is our own call to be servants like Christ.  What holds us back is our conceptions of what it meansto serve. I think, we think of service in a self-degrading way.  Instead of being the person served, we are the “lessor” person serving the served, and we would rather be the served.

The only way to change our negative concepts of service is to understand service as an act of love.  This is what Jesus service was and what gave him the strength to die for love.  To serve is to love!
