11-24-24 - Christ the King - Fr. Leo Schneider

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - Fr. Leo

I’m always uncomfortable with the title, Christ the King!  It’s not that we don’t celebrate the day when salvation will be accomplished, but to think of Christ even as a heavenly king, which he is, misses the way he achieved his victory.

Jesus died on a Cross!  He was murdered by ideology and jealousy. Later he rose from the dead and reclaimed death as a door to the fullness of God.  Never would Jesus be comfortable with the trappings of the hierarchy today. Jesus, wanted simplicity and self-giving.  He came to serve and not be served.

Because we live in a world that shies away from the Spiritual, we need to claim our faith in Jesus and live with active hope in the resurrection.   As we remember the ideology and jealousy that surrounded Jesus’ death, we can look and see the same dynamics around the world today.  Genocide in the name of religion and culture.

At what point has the line of self-defense been crossed?  Honestly, I’m not someone who can make that question, but the same evil that killed Christ, is killing people today.

Where does that leave us?  The important thing for us to remember is that the Kingdom we are called to build is to be built with humility, love and self-giving. Christianity is about living as Christ through the gift of his Spirit.  So let us pray for that Spirit, and the desire to know the richness and joy, meaning and depth, that come from living and loving like Christ!  Let us strive to make Jesus’s truth our own as he did before the Pilate of his time.
