Palm Sunday Fr. Leo

“My God, Why have you forsaken me?”

Jesus being fully human, knew the depths of despair.  He prayed to be spared the cross and then accepted it as an act of redemption.  Later, he enters another dark moment as he is dying and prays to know where God is in all that is happening to him.

The Holy Spirit in Jesus says later in another gospel,  “Father, into your hands I commend my Sprit.”  These words convey the final surrender to the Father and an acceptance to die for the Fathers mission.  What he will come to know is that, like the seed that dies and produces much fruit, Jesus’ death will deliver humankind from the grip of evil.

As we live in the world today, we see that we too are caught between living in God’s light and the over whelming darkness that inhabits our world.  There are wars killing innocent people who must surely be wondering where God is?  Political speech has become vile, calling people non-humans, and others threatening violence if they don’t get their way, saying Obama and Biden should be hung. Darkness!

Yet, we are called to live in peace and self-sacrificing love to create the Kingdom of Christ on earth.  We are disciples of Christ who died for all people to reconcile them to the Father and cast out hate and hate speech!

In our prayer, we need to come to that point where we surrender ourselves and our egos to the Father.  To do so, we may need to hurt enough to finally surrender ourselves to God’s Holy Spirit.  So, let us keep praying together over and over, “Thy Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.”
